Prevarication and the Nigerian .

To most people , prevarication is something they read about or chalk up as not being desirable yet so many people globally are guilty of it.

According to the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary , to prevaricate means to avoid giving a direct answer to a question in order to hide the truth.

Nowadays , some Nigerians under the guise of being smart or 'sharp' as they put it , come incredibly shy of the truth . Why do some people just not see or appreciate truth and honesty as ideals ?.

Lets face it , honesty just adds to the value of one's life . You may not have much , but you know that however little you have is yours . Totally, without fear of harassment or embarassment from Law enforcement or any other person .

Nowadays, it seems people have lost their sense of value alongside their values . People and youths in particular fail to appreciate labour and hard work . I look around and see young men who fail to face their lives and shape up for the task at hand . If we don't have the right mindset or attitude towards work at this age, I wonder when we will have it ! .

I am not trying to play the 'agony uncle' , but we truly need a change . Are we going to leave the running of a nation , the shaping of a collective destiny to people who do not understand the value of hard work? . Honesty, literally has got to be found inn our bloodstream , it has to stem from our blood cells . If I dare speak about moral fibre, I may not finish this post .

It's amazing to hear the sort of things youth say nowadays . I asked a teenager why he did poorly in an exam lately , only to have him reply that he did the exams on his 'own' . If students can not take their studies as their priority I wonder where they expect to find themselves five years from now .

I think a lot of people should first of all, learn that honesty is the best policy . It eliminates controversy, does away with complications in relationships and is generally the model path . It also serves to open doors and opportunities even to the most unlikely of people .

This article is not placing a tag on Nigerians , rather it is an essay on people of the world as a whole . Globally we seem to hve a decline in honesty and truthfulness . Societal problems will not be solved merely by moral instruction . We need to make children appreciate honesty for and in itself . If they can look upon anything dishonest as base , thieves and crooks stand no chance of making them feel inferior when they flaunt their ill-gotten wealth .
